Here's how she finished up after 10 years on and off working on my mk1.



and this is how it got there. Here's how is started in 1998



which progressed into this...







and finally in 2002 it looked like this.

The car did 3 shows before it was back i the garage and on with the rebuild. I stripped the whole thing and started again. That stereo took 6 months to install and 2 hours to rip out.



The car took up home at Paul Websters for quite a while whilst the work got underway

it was all or nothing now, I'd turned my finished mk1 into a rolling shell. pants.

and the new "injection" system... 45 webers...


Polishing began on the head and inlet manifold



...and the f**king gearbox.





Also got a pedal box from Volks-speed



then the car was sent off to the Selectadrive in Hull to start the smooting. First the rear interior arches, and then the engine bay













colour to test the overall shape


chassis legs notches to allow for drive shafts


My uncle got the block back together, and I started adding the shiney bits.





New exhaust from G Werks



Polished and put in place...

Bought these Steffan RS's (fake splits) 14x8's with et 20



They were dipped...



...stripped and outer rims polished









interior finally painted in porsche 70's brown.











got the gearbox back finished. quality chrome did the final touching up for me









I'm blown away with how it looks. it better win something next year (if not only festival )

ready to go back in













Air ride from BSS Air Ride in Holland.... good kit, but requires some strut welding.





There definately wasn't enough room for all of the kit in the original spare wheel well with the original tank.



That was Plan A out of the window. Plan B was to weld in a second hand well from another car, but they are HARD to find. Plan C was to buy a replacement panel and weld it in, but no one makes one. So Plan D was to have one made and have an alloy tank made that fitted into the well.

This is how the interior looked on friday before it went off to MJ's.

I'd gone through loads of different colour schemes and designs before finally going for a hot-rod sort of theme. The most important thing was to have unique door cards because a lot of "done" mk1's have similar variations along the same theme.

the dials were tricky to get right and this is version 10 or something. I dont have a photo of the needles, but they are laser cut from stainless steel and have VW logos on the base.

you'd think the car was nearly done, but in reality it still had to go back to the sprayers for some much needed work. Because I was stubborn I decided to leave the engine in and wrap it I took it out in the end as the engine bay had to be resprayed as well.





so off to the sprayers...











Liking the matt brown effect. Ready for final paint and a polish.







Back at the lockup and the rebuild begins. Repolished the Porsche winter wheels as well.





Engine back in and ready to run. I had no idea what was coming round the corner. I couldn't get any oil pressure at all. 2 engine rebuilds later and it turned out to be a stupid small valve in the oil filter bracket which has got blocked up. anyway, I'm trying to blank out that fortnight of my life... on with the pics.

After almost 10 years of work, getting on the cover of the Golf + (July 2008) is a real finishing post.





a couple of weeks later and a good offer came up on the porsche wheels, so they had to go... and back on came the Steffan RS's. I'm really please with the look.

omg devo tht is an absolutely increadible car, u have actually done EVERYTHING that can be done to a mk1

really love the custom dials, such a class touch and love the photo of the floor trim without the seats and stuff in

the interior is perfect and the outside looks like a proper classic car unlike most euro'd mk1's that look like toy cars.

very very nice, liked it on the 2002 cover but my god wat a transformation from then

the car looks mental, i love the dials simple idea but i have never seen it done before. A lot of time and effort has gone into this car but i suppose its all worth it in the end.

but on a serious note those dials are amazing ! infact the whole car is amazing, the door cars are soo nice along with the chrome engine.

It is just the best not becos your a mate or out but it in my eyes is the best mk1 ever just soo much detail and work that has gone into it

You are aware that it showin with us at Donny lol But good to see peoples reactions at the Vw festival show and shine it mate just dont take the trophy when u win and NO im not bloody cleaning it again lol

The look from behind is fantastic just to see young and old peoples reactions when its on the road, after the Mot we drove to the Golf+ shoot everyone pointing and smiling at it and the sound Fook Me!!! Truley stunning Well done mate

Wow I am an complete awe! Stunning is not the word to describe your mk1 it is absolutely flawless.

There so many little ingenius ideas and the interior is gorgeous.

You have truly raised the bar for others.

about the car...I'm just glad it's FCUKING over...it's been a LONG build and the last few months has been especially hard work. Looking forward to enjoying the car on the roads

This car is immense, think i preffered it with the porker rims rims but it still rocks with the steffans

uve completely chnged my opinion of mk1's.. the car is STUNNING.. i love the baby seat and the dials.. the most creative mk1 i have ever seen.. n i dnt think i'll ever see another mk1 that will beat this one.. top car mate!
